Use RegiClean to Fix File Extension Errors

When you get a new computer at home, you are extremely anxious to install new stuff, try out that latest DJ software or get the latest image editor and have fun with your photos. But over the time, you eventually get used to it and lose interest in the software and uninstall it. But what you do not know is that when you uninstalled the software in your system, it left behind traces of its existence via registry entries. So the next time, you try to open a file which is associated with that software, you get a file extension error. This is a simple enough and extremely common problem. Although there are fixes for file extension errors, for the average or the new user, this can be extremely frustrating as well as confusing.

The RegiClean way Using a windows registry cleaner like RegiClean to fix file extension errors has many distinct advantages and one of the most important advantages is that it scans and cleans the windows registry. There are various keys in the windows registry of which the Hkey Classes Root key is the core. RegiClean quickly scans the whole Root key and checks whether every file extension record has a valid file type attached to it. If it finds a file extension record which does not have a valid file type associated with it, then it checks for its content type value. This procedure is an important step in fixing file extension errors. This is what allows Microsoft Internet Explorer to properly handle files downloaded from the internet. There are other instances that are checked like the file extension pointing to a GUID or it having a shellex subkey. But if none of these are found, then the software fixes the ensuing file extension errors and the trouble-maker file extension record is removed.

File Type records RegiClean also checks the root key for all kinds of file type records that find a mention in the file extension records in order to fix file extension errors. The default icon and the shell command keys are checked thoroughly. If the file specified in the default icon key is nowhere to be found on the hard drives, then the key is removed from the file type records. Also the file types have shell commands like print, open nested within them. If the shell command points to a file that cannot be found on the hard drive then the key is removed from the registry leaving the file type key intact.

The 'open with' errors Have you ever tried to open a file and come up with a box which says ‘Open with’ and asks you to choose a program to open the file? That is what is called the applications box and the keys are stored in a part of the registry. RegiClean does a thorough check on this and looks at whether the application keys point towards a file that cannot be found on the system. In short, if you have ever come across a file extension error on your system, then you can count on RegiClean to get it undone and allow your system to perform at its optimum.
